History shows Lions Could Regret Drafting Defensive Tackle At No. 2

Lions coach Jim Schwartz has a theory about drafting defensive tackles.
It’s not really his theory. It belongs to the late New York Giants executive George Young. It’s called the Planet Theory.
“Big, giant men that run fast?” Schwartz said while paraphrasing Young. “That are strong enough to play the run and athletic enough to play the pass? … There’s not many people like that walking the planet.”

I must be the only person in detroit that heard all season Jim Schwartz was complaining about not having a running game. Lions will draft Okung then a running back or a running back then off line. The Lions do need a running game and that will open up stafford abit more tooo need to move the chains more.

I hear that being down 14-21 to 0 in the first quarter is a great way to help the running game….

Take the DT, and draft a 3-4rd round RB as a place holder for the draft next year. The lions aren’t going 0-16 and 2-14 because of a lack of a running game.. it’s the lack of defense.

Get the DT, have the defense get the ball back to the Offense. Don’t give up TD after TD.

THREE OPTIONS WITH THE #2 PICK:
    1. Safety (Berry) from Tennessee with the #2 pick instead. Pass defense in the middle of the field would solidify.
    2. Offensive line. Production and time-of-posession would be improved if a good lineman can improve the running game or keep the pressure off of Stafford.
    3. Defensive end. DE’s produce more pass-rush pressure.

FOUR REASONS TO DRAFT GERHART (RB) WITH THE 2ND ROUND PICK:
    1. Good pass blocker
    2. Would provide an excellent 1-2 punch when paired with another HB.
    3. Great for short yardage/goal-line he does not go down on first contact like Smith does.
    4. Would be excellent in a two-back offensive scheme.
    5. Gerhart doesn’t have the speed, but he does have the intangibles: strength(weight room), second effort(plays hard), blocking(willing to use his body).

WHY DT IS A BAD CHOICE FOR THE #2 PICK:
    1. Good DT’s don’t get sacks, they draw double-teams for someone else. The only exception in recent memory is Warren Sapp who generated sacks in a 4-man line. See Seymour (Raiders), Wilfork (Patriots), or P. Williams (Vikings), all draw double-teams so others get the sacks. McCoy and Suh are average build. McCoy’s combine numbers stunk (see NFL.com combine results), and both may get lazy once the $$$ comes in by the truckload.

Take Suh best player for the Lions. Take the best OT in the draft Hillsdale’s Veldheer. I would trade down a little in the 2nd and take Veldheer

  • Mike

Okung will fail because of poor footwork. Veldheer OT ran faster, strong and great footwork. I would rather have Suh and Veldheer OT from Hillsdale

  • Brian Neuens

So you better get the one that can, while you can.

  • Brian Neuens

I agree, underrated player, small amount of TV exposure, If he played at Bama,USC,Texas he would be rated way higher

  • Brian Neuens

you need to protect your multi million dollar QB….Or your cooked

  • Tom

Don’t get stupid and start thinking of trading the #1 pick… JUST TAKE SUH!!!
Build a rock solid defense, then concentrate on “O” linemen and a running back. Pick up a RB in a trade Marshan Lynch would work good here.

    JUST TAKE SUH!!!
I laughed at this comment so hard Lions can’t suh going 1st to the rams or bucs depends if they switch picks.. Best thing the Lions can do is trade out it #2 pick overall it’s a bad pick last #2 overall that was good was peppers and that’s been a few years. if the Lions do stay they gotta pick the best player at postion they be stuip to pick the 2nd best dlman with the 2nd pick overall. Lions can’t draft period look at last year draft that was awfull draft for the worst team in the league draft a crappy TE over the OL that the vilkes picked up. Then the Lions pick a bonehead saftey which he drops more balls that incertions. Don’t matter what the Lions do I got them at 0-16 for next season. Nfc and afc east lmfao and nfc north twice vilkes packs and bears owned the lions then tampa away st louis home which the rams beat the lions here.last year. Now if the Lions improve the off line i might give them a win. Defense can’t help your offensive out by them going 3rd and 19 this about every drive.

  • Ryan

I hope this is a joke, they have regretted their last 20 years of number 1 picks besides Barry and Calvin.
