Officials at the University of Michigan are trying to predict the future. Their ability to do so is vital to the circumstances of the Wolverines’ football team.

What penalty would the NCAA likely impose on a football program found to be in major violation of several NCAA rules, including some pertaining to compliance with NCAA regulations and limits on practice time?

An accurate prediction — adopted as part of sanctions Michigan will attempt to impose on itself, its football team and potentially coach Rich Rodriguez — may save the football team scholarships, practice time and time on probation. The sanctions might significantly impact the ability of the team with the most victories in college football history to start winning, again.

The best sanction would be to fire Rich Rod, yesterday. At best he will be a Charlie Weiss, with 7 to 8 win seasons Max.
