Want to be a Safe Senior?

When you’re out in public, travel with a friend. In parking lots or garages, park near the entrance and be aware of your surroundings. When in a car, keep the doors locked; on a bus sit close to the driver.

Women, if you carry a purse, keep it close to the body. Resist the urge to let it dangle by the strap. Men should carry their wallet in an inside jacket pocket or front pants pocket. Avoid carrying a lot of cash or credit cards. Also, consider direct deposit for Social Security and other checks.

Never give personal or financial information to someone you don’t know. And if someone tries to solicit money for an amazing offer that sounds too good to be true — it probably is, so hang onto your money and call the Better Business Bureau.

Develop a buddy system in which you and your friends check-up on one another daily. Keep your neighborhood safe with a Neighborhood Watch program. Report suspicious activities and crimes.

For more Safer Senior tips click on ncpc.org and search for “Safer Seniors.”

Also, contact your local police department and arrange for a visit by the department’s community education officer who can discuss personal safety tips with your organization.
