Fraction With Animals

Children often struggle with fractions, and what it means for something to be one part of something else. A simple and fun way to show this concept is to make fraction animals.

Cut two different colors of construction paper into similar size small squares. Then use pieces of both colors to create the image of an animal – turtles, birds, giraffe, and thing that requires more than a few squares of paper.

You and your child can then count the number of squares of each color, and express each color as a fraction – the squares of one color divided by total number of squares.
