Report: Michigan Ranks 10th In Adult Obesity

A new report just released shows Michigan is tenth in the nation when it comes to adult obesity.  The report from the Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation shows nearly three in ten adults in Michigan are obese.

WWJ spoke with the head of Beaumont's Weight Control Center Dr. Peter McCullough and he said the report is good news for Michigan.

"Many are recognizing that most of the common adult medical problems really are linked to excess weight, including diabetes, high blood pressure, and high blood lipids," said Dr. McCullough.

The new rank reveals a change in health habits, according to Dr. McCullough.

"Many now are seeking intervention on getting the weight down before these complications get too far advanced," said Dr. McCullough.

But the findings also show some promise for the state -- with school lunch standards higher than USDA requirements and laws in place meant to support bikers and walkers.

"Best report though is somewhat encouraging that Michigan has slightly improved," said Dr. McCullough. "And I think we are beginning to make some headway, particularly with children."

Obesity rates increased in 28 states over the past year.
