Sprinkling Restrictions In Troy Saves Residents $1M

Two years ago, the city of Troy started a pilot project to cut the cost of water purchased from the Detroit Water System.  And as a result, water usage went down and resulted in a new three-year contract with the Detroit Water Department that is 15 percent lower than the average cost to other customer communities.

Troy Water and Sewer Superintendent Rick Shepler said it was a little controversial at the time.

"I wasn't sure it would pass, but the council supported it and amazingly the residents, when they found out they could save dollars in their own pockets, went for it and are doing a fine job," Shepler said.

The key was restricting watering to the hours of 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., Shepler said.
