Mud Day 2010

[photogallerylink id=8829 align=left] Messy mayhem at Hines Park-Nankin Mills in Westland. Hundreds of children 12-years old and under showed up from across the metro area in their very worst, old shoes and clothing, ready to roll around in the mud as part of Mud Day 2010.They weren't disappointed because many were caked in mud from head to toe.

More than 200 tons of specially mixed topsoil and 20,000 gallons of water were used to make the messy playground.

Wayne County Executive Bob Ficano said the day is alot of fun, although when he first attended mud day 23 years ago he wore a suit. Ficano say that was a big mistake because kids throw mud at people standing around the edges of the playground watching.

At noon, 11-year-old Christopher Salupes of Livonia and 10-year-old Nina Temple of Clarkston, were crowned Mr. and Miss Mud.

Today marks the 23rd anniversary of the event.

"Mud Limbo" and wheel barrel games also were part of the line-up.

The annual Mud Day event was co-sponsored with the Westland Fire Department, ITC Holdings and Community Alliance Credit Union.
