Patrick Eaves does not consider himself the top athlete in his family. That honor goes to Rueben Eaves, a 130-pound 18-month-old.
A Newfoundland dog, Rueben is especially at home in the water. On frozen water, however, it’s Patrick Eaves who’s the breadwinner.
Eaves, 26, was rewarded for his hard work for the Red Wings on Wednesday with a one-year deal worth $750,000. The Wings first signed Eaves in August, after finding him languishing on the free-agent market and figuring he might help. He did: His speed and willingness to block shots transformed the penalty kill, and he also contributed 12 goals and 10 assists in 65 games.
