Arrest In Westland Fireworks Shooting

Westland police have made an arrest in connection with a shooting at the city's fireworks festival earlier this week. The suspect, an 18-year-old Belleville man, was expected to be arraigned Friday in 18th District Court. Surveillance video taken at the Westland Summer Festival provided police the lead they needed in the arrest of their suspect, accused of shooting another festival goer in the leg last Sunday night.

A witness was able to work with police off of that video to identify the Belleville man, who was then arrested Wednesday outside his home after a brief foot chase with police.

It was around 11 p.m. Sunday night, as a crowd estimated at around 100,000 people began leaving the fireworks show when two shots were fired and an 18-year-old Canton resident lay shot in the leg.

The shooting victim is recovering.

As for a movtive in the shooting, police say the victim apparently stepped on the foot of the suspect, who then opened fire.
