Judge: Kilpatrick Can Join General Population

A judge says former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick can be released from isolation into the general population at the federal prison in Milan.

The two-page order from U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds was released Wednesday.

The ex-mayor's lawyer, James Thomas, told the Detroit Free Press he thinks "this is much better for Mr. Kilpatrick rather than being in the hole.''

Kilpatrick was transferred to Milan on Friday from the Oaks Correctional Facility near Manistee, where he had begun serving 18 months to five years for probation violations on June 8.

Thomas said Kilpatrick has access to a good legal library, and the facility is relatively close to his legal team.

Kilpatrick is under federal indictment on alleged fraud and tax violations.
