A government-run wildlife rehabilitation center isn’t the only place people are taking birds and animals coated with oil from a spill in the Kalamazoo River.

Workers at the private Circle D Wildlife Refuge in Kalamazoo County say Friday they’ve received 15 geese and other birds this week. The birds have come from Calhoun County, where the oil spill is concentrated.

An official U.S. Fish and Wildlife rehabilitation center in Calhoun County had received more than 20 birds and animals.

The leak detected Monday came from a pipeline owned by Calgary, Alberta-based Enbridge Inc. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates more than 1 million gallons of oil may have been spilled.

Company and federal officials say they don’t believe the oil will reach Lake Michigan, where the Kalamazoo River empties.
