Showcase Of Local Youth Baseball

It's going to be an exciting weekend for youth baseball teams in the greater Detroit area.

The Detroit Tigers Hometown Championship will kick off Thursday to showcase Detroit's very best youth baseball and softball talent.

The opening ceremonies will feature Tigers outfielder, Austin Jackson, who will throw a ceremonial first pitch to begin the tournament. Shortly afterwards, the games begin.

The annual year-end championship has served over 600 youth aged eight to 18. This year, a total of 45 youth baseball teams are expected to compete at Jayne Field in Detroit.

An exciting baseball and softball skills competition will take place Friday that will give boys and girls a chance to show off their pitching, hitting, and running abilities.

The public is invited to partake in free festivities at the Community Fun Day on Saturday from 11 to 3 pm at Jayne Field.

Tournament participants had an opportunity to learn about the beautification of the field, field maintenance and the importance of volunteerism.

Jayne Field was cleaned and prepared for safe play last Friday. The clean-up initiative brought together Think Detroit PAL, various community partners, tournament players and coaches, and volunteers.

The four-day tournament is funded by the Detroit Tigers Foundation in partnership with the Youth Development Commission and the City of Detroit Parks and Recreation Department.
