Suicides Worry Local School

In the last two years, seven past or current students at Lake Orion High School have committed suicide.

"MINDS" - a group dedicated to educating the public about mental health - is holding a series of public forums in an effort to stem the frightening tide.

Karen Hudson's world was turned upside down when her son, Michael, committed suicide last year at the age of 19. She says although he had received for a brief period of depression, he was on the mend.

"He was certainly not the kid walking around dressed in black with his head down. He was a kid walking in that made everyone smile. So he wasn't the kid you'd expect it from, just like I've heard from every other kid that we lost through Lake Orion High School. They're not the ones you'd expect," said Hudson.

Now she and her husband, Hugh, vow to help other families avoid a similar tragedy.

They believe that by giving parents the tools that they need to talk with their kids about mental health and suicide, it may prevent a tragedy like hers.
