college Report: Mich. Students Hurt By State Aid CutsA new report again draws attention to the effects of decreased state aid to Michigan’s public universities. The Michigan League for Human Services report Monday says state funding for universities was cut 9 percent between 2006 and 2010.  Tuition increased by 31 percent in roughly the same period. The numbers aren’t adjusted for inflation.

The report says the increased tuition makes it more difficult for many students to afford college.

The report says the average Michigan student graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 2008 left college with a loan amount of $22,000, up 44 percent from 2001.

Many universities have increased financial aid recently to try and offset reductions in state aid to students.
