Oneupweb White Paper: How Facebook Threatens Google

The Traverse City digital marketing agency Oneupweb announced Wednesday that its staffers have done the dirty work of translating Facebook's complicated platform into readable material for marketers.

And Oneupweb's latest white paper also includes the truthful dirt on the Facebook-Google battle.

The white paper, titled "The Facebook Fallacy: Open Graph = Google Killer," clearly explains the importance of the social network's search platform and how it affects marketers, users, competitors and even the power of Google.

"Facebook is brilliant and it's only becoming smarter," said Oneupweb founder and CEO, Lisa Wehr. "Its new Open Graph platform can seem overwhelming, but we've managed to simplify it for the convenience of marketers."

No matter how much you distill it, you can't ignore the magnitude of opportunity this presents to marketers. Facebook's new Open Graph platform is a major change for the World Wide Web -- such a change that it threatens the almighty Google. Facebook's Open Graph sets a new level of demographic targeting that is organized around consumer social profiles -- providing marketers an unprecedented advertising platform. In essence Facebook has now introduced search into its network, ultimately supplying marketers with more outlets, more consumer traffic and more detailed consumer demographics.

More than 46 percent of social network users are connecting through Facebook, accounting for more than 175 million Facebook visitors per day. And Open Graph has just made these consumer numbers even more valuable for businesses.

Oneupweb highlights the marketing value of Open Graph:

* Brands, products and services can be shared, reviewed and recommended on any Open Graph enabled Web site (Facebook is able to connect beyond its network).
* More than 1.5 million pieces of content are shared each day on the Open Graph platform.
* The volume of search queries on Facebook rocketed 10 percent in February 2010 compared to search queries in February 2009.

"Remember Google is not just about search, and Facebook is not just about friends," Wehr said. "Both are concerned about making money and they do this by selling advertising space to marketers. Now as Facebook introduces search, on top of providing more traffic and better consumer demographics, the social network may out perform Google. This makes it imperative for marketers to become familiar with Open Graph."
