A 14-year-old from Niles has been found guilty of first-degree murder in the shooting death of his grandfather.

Dakotah Eliason was charged as an adult in the March 7 shooting death of 69-year-old Jesse Miles at the victim’s home in the southwestern Michigan community of Buchanan.

Jurors deliberated for about after three hours on Thursday before coming back with a guilty verdict on first-degree murder, which carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole.

The defense had argued for second-degree murder.

Sentencing is set for Oct. 4.
