Johnny Damon Defends Detroit After Writer's Jabs At City

Despite not reading the story, Tigers outfielder Johnny Damon fired back at longtime Boston Globe columnist Dan Shaughnessy on Wednesday, taking exception with the writer's admitted inability to comprehend why the veteran major leaguer would rather stay in Detroit than move back to Boston.

Damon made national headlines earlier this week when, after being claimed off waivers by his former team, the Red Sox, he opted to veto any trade -- his right, per his contract -- to remain with the Tigers, despite them being a long shot to make the playoffs.

"I definitely thought long and hard about it, and the bottom line was my happiness here and the guys here telling me this is a good place for me," Damon said after going 0-for-6 in the Tigers 4-3, 12-inning loss to the Royals on Wednesday afternoon. "Detroit gets a bad rap. I love it here, my family loves it here, a bunch of the players who have been here a while love it here, the new guys love it here. There's a lot to offer here."
