police lights new Police, Fire, EMS Services On The Line In WayneA city council meeting Thursday night has opened the floodgates in the city of Wayne, after City Manager John Zech proposed to out-source services for fire, EMS and police.

Wayne resident Melissa Wysong tells WWJ, when citizens heard about the proposal, they were shocked:

“They were in a closed door meeting, and on the agenda was the proposal to eliminate and shut down the Wayne Fire Department, and the Wayne Police Department. They were in a closed door meeting for about an hour; at eight o’clock they opened those doors back up to the public, and allowed us in.”

Wysong says voters approved a millage back in May that would have provided additional funding for the police and fire….a total of 1.5-million dollars.

City Manager John Zech tells WWJ the proposal was not discussed in closed session, however he said the changes are under consideration because the city is in a $1.5 million tax dispute with Ford Motor Company.

Zech said he’s hoping to resolve the issue and “hopeful” that budget changes won’t be needed.

City Council meets again on Tuesday, September 7th.

And what will they cut next year and the year after? There is bone exposed all around and soon there will be nothing to cut ~ just turn out the lights.

  • Carmen

I think we should outsource the city manager! That is crazy Wayne needs it’s own police department

what are the powers that be in wayne thinking…??? cut spending elsewhere… you need the fire and police departments.. are you all crazy or do the officials want to keep they’re big paychecks… this isn’t right on any level…. good luck to the policemen/women as well as the firemen/women…keeping you in my prayers!!!!!!

Guess that Wayne fireman who constantly shows up for lunchtime hockey won’t be coming back anytime soon.

Does anyone else wonder why WDIV or Fox 2 or the Free Press or any other media is not actively pursuing this story? I agree with Carmen, they should out source the City Manager. I can only conclude that he has severely bumped his head or is suffering from dementia. No sane person would consider this proposal while keeping his well over $100,000 salary with perks and benefits. He obviously has no concern for the residents of the City of Wayne.

Wayne firemen work 24 hours shifts and 56 hours per week. None of them are playing hockey while on duty. They are ready to respond to emergencies. The firemen are active in the community during their time off. Many of the firefighters play in charity hockey games that raise money to great local charities. The Wayne firemen have a history of raising money to sponsor Wayne youth hockey teams, figure skating, WMHS Football and cheerleading, and youth baseball teams.
