Detroit Mayor Bing Visits Fire-Ravaged Neighborhood

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing making a surprise visit to one of the Detroit neighborhoods ravaged by a series of house fires last week.

WWJ's citybeat reporter Vickie Thomas was in the neighborhood waiting for him. She was the only reporter on hand when Bing showed up.

Vickie says while she interviewed residents and business owners on Robinwood Street on Detroit's east side, all of a sudden Detroit Mayor Dave Bing pulls up in the mayoral SUV to check out the damage firsthand.

When asked what was going through his mind while he surveyed the damage, Bing says, "It's painful. There's absolutely no doubt about it. I mean I can only imagine the negative impact that it's having on the people in this neighborhood and so I wanted to come over here firsthand and see the devastation and start figuring out what we can do differently to help the people that may be out of a home, but also to clean up the mess that's left behind."
