Sinkhole On Middlebelt Road

A section of Middlebelt Road in Farmington Hills collapsed early Thursday morning forcing the Road Commission for Oakland County to close the road.

The cause of the collapse is not yet known, but Craig Bryson with the Road Commission for Oakland County tells WWJ that crews have a theory.

"The only thing we can come up with is the only thing under that road is a sanitary sewer. We're just, you know, assuming the sanitary sewer may have collapsed," Bryson said.

"We don't know that because the sewer is about 25 or 30 feet down, and nobody has excavated down to it yet," he said.

Middlebelt is expected to remain fully closed between 12 and 13 Mile roads so crews can make proper repairs.

The detour route for through traffic is 12 Mile Road to Orchard Lake Road to 13 Mile Road and back to Middlebelt and vice versa.

It is not known how long it will take to repair the hole.
