Ex-Detroit Mayor's Cousin Misses Lawsuit Deadline

A woman identified as the cousin of ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has missed a deadline in a lawsuit accusing her of taking money from a charitable fund.

The Detroit Free Press reports Saturday that Nneka Cheeks had until this week to respond to the civil suit filed by Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox.

Cox accuses Cheeks of withdrawing more than $24,000 from the Manoogian Mansion Restoration Society's bank account between 2007 and 2009 for jewelry, golf and other benefits.

The complaint was filed Aug. 13 in Ingham County Circuit Court and asks the court to order Cheeks to account for the money, return it and pay damages.

Cheeks could not be reached for comment.

The Manoogian Mansion is the mayor's official residence and where Kilpatrick lived.
