State Regulators: Last Gas Pipeline Fines In '03

Michigan regulators say the last time the state fined a natural gas company for a pipeline safety violation was in 2003.

Pipeline safety is drawing more attention nationwide after the Sept. 9 explosion that killed at least four people and destroyed nearly 40 homes in San Bruno, Calif.

Michigan regulators in 2003 approved settlements with companies including Michigan Consolidated Gas Company and Consumers Energy regarding noncompliance with Michigan gas safety standards.

The Michigan Public Service Commission last week told The Associated Press that no fines had been issued in at least a decade. The commission provided corrected information Monday.
