Stolen Ambulance Recovered

Normally, an ambulance is a lifeline for someone in need. But, Tuesday , morning, it was the getaway vehicle for a suspected thief.

Police say medics were at work in a home on Manor street in Detroit when someone made off in the ambulance.

WWJ got the details from Fire Commissioner James Mack.

"The EMS had a run to a location in the area about 5:50 this morning, and as the medics went in, a few minutes later someone jumped into the running medic unit and stole it," Mack said.

The family ended up transporting the patient to the hospital in their own car.

Mack said fire officials were able to track the ambulance using the GPS system installed in the vehicle. The advised police of the thieves location.

The suspect was arrested and taken to a hospital for a mental evaluation.
