Michigan Women Honored

Nearly 300 people were in attendance at the Royal Park Hotel in Rochester Monday as 30 women were honored as part of the inaugural Esteemed Women of Michigan luncheon benefitting the Gary Burnstein Community Health Clinic.

Dana Burnstein, Chairman Emeritus of the clinic, said the goal of the clinic is to expand to five days a week in order to serve more people.

Gussie Hale, a patient who received free help, brought many in the crowd to tears when she expressed her gratitude to the clinic and doctors who helped her beat high blood pressure.

Among those honored were WWJ Newsradio 950's Vickie Thomas. Other honorees included:

•Catherine McGhee: Miss Michigan America

•Eleanor Josaitis: Focus Hope

•Dr. Nathima Atchoo: Doctor and Chaldean Humanitarian of 2009

•Karen Love: VP Public Relations Detroit Rescue Mission

•Beckie Francis Russi: Oakland University Womens Basketball Coach

•Senator Gilda Jacobs: State Senate

•Lisa Brown: State Representative

•Judge Julie Nicholson: 52/3 District Court Judge

•Judi Brown Clark: Olympic Medalist, Director of MSU Multicultural Affairs and Inclusion

Organizers of the event said they wanted to "recognize women of Michigan who have excelled in their profession, risen above unacceptable circumstances, found a way to help others or have become a beacon of hope for our younger generation."

The clinic was first set up in 1997 by Dr. Gary Burnstein who cared for patients at Grace Centers for Hope. With the help of doctors and nurses, the clinic provides free health care to people who need it.
