Fractions are one area of math that continues to baffle teachers and students. While fractions form the core of much of middle and high school math, many kids do not master the basics of fractions in elementary school, leaving them lost when algebra begins.

The Federal government published a guide this week to improve students’ understanding of fractions. It included recommendations that fractions be taught to kids using a number line first, and showing students that fractions are just like other numbers. The report also suggested that kids have practice estimating problems using fractions, and that math problems be more closely connected to real life situations.
