5-Star Safety Rating System Getting Tougher

As of Tuesday, it's going to be a lot tougher for new cars to get that coveted "five star" safety rating from the government.

As WWJ AutoBeat Reporter Jeff Gilbert explains, since most vehicles were getting the top 5-star grade, the government has toughened the standards … and now we find out how well the first 34 cars that were tested did. Some could drop to two stars.

It's not that the cars are less safe, the government says, but it's a way to differentiate vehicles that are safer, and have the latest technology.

A lot has changed since the current rating system was put into place 30 years ago.

More information will be released following a scheduled 9:45 a.m. news conference.
