Mystery Oil Spill Soils Lake Huron Beach

An oil spill, about 25 yards wide and 300 yards long, forced officials to close a Lake Huron beach at Cheboygan State Park in northern lower Michigan.

The U.S. Coast Guard was working to determine the source of the spill.
A sheen about 300 yards long was drifing offshore near the Duncan Bay Yacht Club at Cheboygan.

A tugboat and a car ferry were in the area. Investigators plan to take samples from both to determine if the oil came from either vessel.
Park rangers closed sections of the public beach out of safety concerns.

Towels and sections of absorbent boom were placed along the beach where the oil washed ashore. Workers shoveled oil-soaked sections of sand from the beach.
