Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said he met with veteran forward Kirk Maltby today. Maltby has to decide whether to report to Grand Rapids (AHL) or retire after clearing waivers Wednesday. Holland said he told Maltby to take the weekend to decide, which might be an indication that he’s leaning toward retiring.
With forwards Kris Draper (groin) and Justin Abdelkader (ribs) unavailable for Friday’s season opener against the Ducks, Maltby could be in the lineup if Todd Bertuzzi’s lower back injury prevents him from playing.
“I think he’s going to wait until Monday, but if we need him to tomorrow, he’ll play tomorrow,” Holland said. “I know which way he’s leaning, but I told him just make sure he takes the weekend and then make his final decision on Monday.
