Deadly Accident On US 23

emergency istock Deadly Accident On US 23Five people are dead after a head-on collision Sunday afternoon on US 23 SB between Lee and Silver Lake Roads in Green Oak Township.

“A Prius with four occupants had crossed the center line striking a Blazer with five occupants. There were a total of three patients out of the vehicles laying on the ground. The remaining patients were all pinned in the vehicles and had to be extricated with heavy equipment,” said Fire Deputy Chief Kevin Gentry.

The Prius had been travelling northbound before it crossed the median.

Gentry says three people were pronounced dead at the scene, while two others were pronounced dead at a local hospital.

“The remaining [four] patients were transported to the University of Michigan by a combination of Livingston County EMS units, and Survival Flight helicopters, with significant injuries,” said Gentry.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident. Gentry says they are looking into whether alcohol may have played a role in the collision.

Both directions of US 23 were closed for several hours.

My heart dropped when I heard and saw the video of the accident. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families who have lost loved ones in this crash. When people get behind the wheel of a car that need to be very careful of what they are doing.

I travel from Ohio to MI often. I-23 is dangerous and the police could be pulling drivers over continuously for excessive speed and reckless driving. The speed limit is 70mph. Many people drive at 80+mph while using cell phones. I was 1/2 mile behind the accident, going south. I saw it close up when the police had us all cross the median to reroute us north. The blue tarps lying over the deceased along with the scattered pieces of the cars are a site I’ll never forget.
My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased and injured.

My friends were involved in the accident. They were all wonderful kids. It’s true that the good die young – I’ll miss you guys, forever and always.
