Student Dies At Cass Tech High School

A Cass Tech High School senior collapsed and died Tuesday morning at the school because of what is believed to be a health-related issue.

Spokesman for Detroit Public Schools, Steve Wasko, said Arieal Lombard was taken to a local hospital after the incident, where she was pronounced dead.

Wasko described what happened.

"Arieal passed out and fell on a stair well at the school. She did not tumble the stairs, she simply fell in place and there were a number of students and adults in the immediate area who were able to hold her in place," he said.

Wasko said grief-counselors were on hand Tuesday to talk with students, and will remain at the school for the rest of the week.

Wasko said Lombard was an exceptional student and very active at the school.  She was a member of the National Honor Society, a pep club member, served as a senior advisor, participated in the academic games and had played on the school's softball team.
