Students To Release Lake Sturgeon In Detroit River

Officials from the U.S. and Canada are celebrating a success in their efforts to restore a lake sturgeon habitat in the Detroit River.

U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, U.S. Rep. John Dingell and others are scheduled to appear Friday at a park in Trenton, to honor the breakthrough.

At the event, 16 lake sturgeon are to be tagged for science and released by area high school students into the Detroit River. The sturgeon were raised from eggs collected at a constructed spawning reef in the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge.

Members of the public can view the juvenile sturgeon up close before the release.
