Casket Of Michigan's 1st Governor To Be Displayed
The casket containing the remains of Michigan's first governor will be displayed at the Capitol.
The public can attend an arrival ceremony at 4:30 p.m. Monday for the casket of Stevens T. Mason. Mason's casket will be in the Capitol Rotunda for viewing Tuesday.
Members of the Michigan Army National Guard Funeral Honors Team will provide guard detail.
The casket departs Wednesday morning for Detroit's Capitol Park, where Mason's remains will be reburied at 1 p.m. The downtown park is the site of Michigan's first capitol.
Crews looking to relocate Mason's remains in the park this summer initially failed to find a coffin. The metal casket eventually was found encased in a concrete vault about five feet down.
Mason was elected governor in 1835 and re-elected in 1837.
