Detroit Ordinance Prohibits Fuel In Portable Containers

The city of Detroit is gearing up for Angel's Night. Starting Wednesday night, no one is allowed to dispense or carry fuel in portable containers.

The Detroit City Council okayed the ordinance that bans the dispensing and carrying of fuel in portable containers. It takes effect at midnight tonight and will run to 11:59 p.m. on Sunday night. There will only be three exceptions: a stalled vehicle, heating a residence, and emergency generators. It even goes another step: gas station attendants will have to get information in writing from anyone asking for gasoline in a portable container, including the name, address, and the amount of fuel.

Violation of the ordinance could bring a $500 fine and/or 90 days in jail.
