Experts Weigh In On Detroit Schools

A panel of education experts is working to mend the broken school system in Detroit. WWJ's Pat Sweeting reported on the discussions that aimed to promote collaboration between school systems, parents, and community ultimately guiding schools toward producing well-educated students.

According to Joel Klein, New York City Public Schools Chancellor, the current test scores and graduation rates are signs that Detroit Public Schools aren't getting the results they need.

"By the fourth grade in Detroit on the national tests, you're looking at results that are dramatically lower than most large urban cities. If kids are behind in the fourth grade, then they're further behind in the eighth grade, you can see why you get such low high school graduation rates," he explained.

Klein said that he believes the solution is rooted in key ideas like "creating additional charter schools" that are high-quality and informed by proven educational models, "think(ing) differently about the use of technology in the school system," and figuring out ways to reward excellence in teaching.
