LCC Bans Sale Of Alcoholic Energy Drinks

The Michigan Liquor Control Commission says it will ban the sale of high-powered alcoholic energy drinks due to mounting concerns the beverages pose health risks, especially to young people.

The agency cited the hospitalization last month of nine Washington state college students who drank Four Loko, a caffeinated malt liquor with an alcohol content of 12 percent, roughly the same as an average bottle of wine. The ban effects about 50 beverages, including popular sellers like Four Loko and Joose.

The LCC said manufacturers have 30 days to take the drinks off Michigan store shelves. The ban will stay in effect until more research is conducted by the federal Food and Drug Administration.

In a statement, the Michigan Beer and Wine Wholesalers Association said it supports the commission's decision and will take the necessary steps to comply with the ban.
