Shows, Summits Shine This Weekend

There are some spectacular shows in town for younger crowd from Curious George and Mickey's Magic Show to a local production of Alice in Wonderland. There are also awesome Detroit events like ARISE! Neighborhoods Rising Summit and a special performance by the musicians of the DSO.

In the aftermath of this Halloween, you may have much more candy in your house than you know what to do with! Saturday November 6 from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Bright Side Dental in Royal Oak is taking the candy out of your hands (and out of the kids' mouths!) by offering $1 for every pound of unwanted Halloween candy (up to five pounds/person). All candy collected is donated to Operation Gratitude, a non-profit organization that sends candy to deployed US military. 3213 Rochester Road

For the kids this weekend there are plenty of fun things to do and see!

For artist-in-training, the DIA holds drawing workshops for kids 6-14 on Friday nights (6 p.m. – 9 p.m.) Stop by with the kids after exploring the gallery. Supplies are included, and instructors will help participants make pencil drawings to take home. Class on Friday November 5 will take place in the African Gallery, N100. November 6 at 10:30 and 1:30 p.m. and November 7 at 2 & 5 p.m. The Community House (380 S. Bates Birmingham) is putting on Alice in Wonderland.  Kids will love this musical adaptation of the classic story. General seating is $15, and Kids floor seating is $10. Head to the Palace November 6 at 3 p.m. for Disney Live! Mickey's Magic Show. The show features grand illusions and favorite Disney characters, including Donald and Goofy Cinderella and her Fairy Godmother Alice in Wonderland and the Mad Hatter and beloved Disney princesses Jasmine, Belle and Snow White. Kids will be in awe of their favorite characters and incredible illusions. Tickets range from $19-$40, and are available for purchase online.

Curious George is in Detroit! The loveable monkey (played by Michigan-native Jenna Crawford) is swinging around the Fox Theatre.  Catch one of 6 performances from November 5-7. Shows are on Friday at 7pm, Saturday at 11am, 3pm & 7:00pm, and Sunday at 1pm & 5pm. Arrive early, the first 500 kids get Chef Pisgetti hats! Tickets are available here and range from $12-$65.

Residents and community organizations looking to improve their neighborhoods will learn of strategies and resources to help them at the first annual ARISE Detroit! Neighborhoods Rising Summit on Saturday, Nov. 6 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Workshops that cover topics like public safety, renovation, and other social issues are at the center of the event. Enjoy a continental breakfast and lunch, while you learn about city improvement efforts.

The event is free and open to the public, however, all participants must register and sign up for the workshops at www.arisedetroit.org, or phone 313-921-1955.

The DSO musicians will be playing Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake Suite at the Our Lady Star of the Sea Church (467 Fairford Grosse Pointe Woods, MI). Join the musicians on November 7 at 7:30 p.m. who are putting on this series of concerts during the strike to keep music alive in the Detroit area. Learn more here.
