Funerals and Broken Hearts

When someone you love dies, maybe it really does break your heart.

A new study by Thomas Buckley of the University of Sydney Nursing School says the death of a spouse, or a child can trigger potentially harmful rapid increases in heart rate and changes in heart rhythm.

The scientists say the problem lasts about six months, and then the heart returns to normal activity.

Doctors say this means the health and welfare of bereaved survivors should be of concern to medical professionals, as well as family and friends.

The study just presented at the American Heart Association meeting in Chicago.
