East Side Shootout Leaves One Person Dead

A former Detroit police officer is confronted by the kind of criminal he spent his lifetime protecting other Detroiters against. The result is a shootout, and one dead suspected robber.

WWJ's Vickie Thomas reports from the scene on Grayton and Southhampton, near I-94 and Cadieux on the city's east side, that the former Detroit cop came home at about 1:30 Wednesday morning and was robbed at gunpoint. As the suspect ran away, he fired at the former officer, who returned fire, killing the suspect.

There were reportedly dozens of shell casings on the ground as a result of the gunfight. Since then, they've all been picked up by investigators. Police are also looking for an accomplice to the armed robbery, who escaped in an unidentified vehicle.
