Premature Birth Study

Some startling figures released in a study of premature births and African American babies.

The University of Michigan's Center for Healthcare Research and Transformation found that African American babies in Michigan are 70 percent more likely to be born prematurely than an infant of any other group. A disparity they say is unexplained.

The study also shows that one in eight babies is born prematurely in the U.S. and Michigan, placing them at high risk for respiratory problems and mortality, which are among the most significant cost drivers in health care, costing the system $27 billion annually.
