Court Date For Dad Charged In Deadly Fire Pit Accident

The case of a man charged in a fire-pit accident that killed his daughter moves closer to trial, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for Tuesday morning in Macomb County.

41-year-old Majd Mohammad Al-Shara is charged with felony child abuse in the death of his six-year-old daughter. The child suffered burns over most of her body, when flames shot out of a fire pit, as her father attempted to re-light the wood by pouring gas onto the fire.

Al-Shara's lawyer suggests a poorly designed gas canister is to blame, but investigators have been waiting for more test results before making any determination.

Al-Shara also has legal trouble tied to his immigration status. He has lived in the United States illegally for nearly 10 years. Legal proceedings with the Bureau of Immigration and Naturalization are pending.
