Consumers Energy Honored at Great Start Business Summit: Consumers Energy has been named the recipient of the Early Childhood Investment Corp.'s first-ever Fierce Heart Business Award. The award -- recognizing outstanding leadership and investment in the state's school readiness movement -- was awarded to Consumers at ECIC's Great Start Business Summit Nov. 30 at Michigan State University's Kellogg Center. Judy Y. Samelson, ECIC chief executive officer, lauded Consumers for sharply increasing its grant support for early childhood programs in Michigan to $330,000, an increase of about 70 percent from 2009. The grants supported early childhood initiatives all across Michigan, from child care scholarships in Ingham, Hillsdale, Grand Traverse and other counties to Imagination Libraries in Jackson, Eaton and Clinton counties. David W. Joos, board chairman for CMS Energy and Consumers Energy, accepted the award on behalf of all Consumers employees. The Fierce Heart is an award series introduced in 2009 by ECIC recognizing early childhood leadership at many levels. Past winners have included individuals and groups. The Early Childhood Investment Corporation is a public/private initiative working to restructure Michigan's investment in children from birth to five through state and local community efforts.
