Company Postpones Nuke Generator Shipment On Lakes

A Canadian electric power company says it's postponing a planned shipment of 16 old generators with radioactive parts across three of the Great Lakes on their way to a recycling plant in Sweden.

Bruce Power Inc. had planned to ship the devices this fall from a Lake Huron port, but has yet to receive a license from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission.

Spokesman John Peevers says winter weather blocks a move for now, but the company hopes the shipment will go forward next spring.

Groups representing environmentalists, Great Lakes cities and American Indian tribes oppose the plan. They say they fear an accident that would contaminate the lakes with radiation.

The company says the generators would be welded shut and the shipment would be safe.
