Flint To Host Lego League State Championships Saturday

Forty-eight Lego teams from around the state will come to Flint on Saturday, Dec. 11, for the 12th Annual FIRST Lego League Tournament - Flint Championship Games. 

The competition is at Carman-Ainsworth Middle School, 1403 W. Maple Ave. in Flint. The games are free and open to the public. 

Opening ceremonies begin at 8:30 a.m. Robots run from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.  The awards ceremony is at 4:30 p.m.

The tournament director of the Flint Championship Games is William Welch. Local teams include Fenton, Flushing, Goodrich and Linden.

A special highlight on Saturday is the addition of a Junior FIRST Lego League Expo from 10 a.m. to noon, with an awards ceremony at 1 p.m. Junior FLL is for students aged 6-9 years old. Lego League is aimed at students aged 9 to 14. 

This year's theme is the 2010 Body Forward Challenge, where teams explore the cutting-edge world of Biomedical Engineering through a robot game and project. Teams are judged on technical Interviews, core values, teamwork and a presentation.

The Flint Championship Games are a sanctioned event of FIRST - For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. FIRST strives to show youth the fun in science and technology. 

There are only two state championship game sites this year -- Flint and Detroit.

Winners of the Flint Championship Games will be among those representing Michigan at the FIRST World Festival in St. Louis, Missouri, April 27-30, 2011.

There are 330 Lego teams in Michigan this year. Teams qualified for the Flint Championship Games by winning tournaments in Flint, East Lansing, Grandville, Marquette, Saginaw, Sault Ste. Marie and Zeeland.
