Macomb County Gets New Sheriff

Macomb County Sheriff's Captain Anthony Wickersham has been named the new Sheriff in the county. He'll take over for Mark Hackel, who is moving into the County Executive position January 1st.

Wickersham, who began his career in 1986 as a Correctional Officer, says he's the best man for the job because he knows the department inside and out.

"I have the experience, I have the education,  I understand the operations of the sheriff's office," Wickersham said during an interview with the Macomb County Sheriff Appointment Committee which consisted of Prosecutor Eric Smith, Judge Mark Switalski and Clerk Carmella Sabaugh.  "I have the ability to work with state, federal, county and local partners in this region and throughout the state of Michigan."

Over the years, Wickersham served in every rank of the department until he was promoted to Chief of Staff in 2001.

The vote was unanimous.

Six other candidates were interviewed before the vote.  They included Undersheriff Kent Lagerquist, Sgt. David Willis, former Dearborn Police Chief Tim Strutz and three current or former Detroit officers, Melvin Turner, Robert Dunlap, and Brian Ede.
