Wayne County Sheriff To Investigate Convict Escape

A convicted rapist who escaped from custody is back behind bars -- and now, the Wayne County Sheriff's Department is trying to find out how he got away in the first place.

Now that 45-year-old Willie Wright is back in custody, Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napolean and others have launched an investigation into the incident. They want to find out if proper protocol was used by two deputies who were overpowered by Wright.

Wright was in leg irons and not handcuffed because of a wrist injury that led to an extra day of freedom for the 45-year-old.

Wright was sought for about 30 hours. He is awaiting sentencing for kidnapping and raping his ex-girlfriend, then shooting her in the head as she tried to flee.

Sheriff's officials sau Wright was at Harper Hospital for treatment Tuesday when he broke free. The department says a hospital staffer spotted Wright on Wednesday and stalled him until guards and deputies could capture him.
