GM Adding Hundreds Of Jobs In Flint

DETROIT (WWJ) General Motors is adding a shift and more than 650 jobs at its assembly plant in Flint. GM is planning to add a third shift at this plant and that is going to necessitate the new hiring.

WWJ AutoBeat Reporter Jeff Gilbert says some of those workers are GM workers on layoff  and some will include newly hired.  The newly hired workers will be hired in at a 'second-tier' rate. The second-tier rate is about half the rate than current workers make.

At the GM assembly plant in Flint, among other things, the plant builds the heavy-duty Chevrolet and GMC Sierra trucks.

WWJ AutoBeat reporter Jeff Gilbert says this could be signal that the economy could be turning around: "(The increase in hiring) Definitely signaling that GM is selling a lot more pick-ups. They make the big trucks at this plant, particularly the work pick-ups the heavy-duty pick-ups and there is a demand for those, so that could actually be very good news for the economy. These are vehicles that are used in construction, they are used in other industries, they are used for work."

An official announcement is expected to be made on Monday by GM.
