Mich. Woman Gets 8-15 Years In Newborn's Death

BAY CITY (AP) - A 20-year-old woman has been sentenced to 8 to 15 years in prison in the death of her newborn son, whose body was found in a trash container behind a Bay County store.

The Bay City Times says Nicole Kipfmiller was given credit for 357 days served during the sentencing hearing Monday before Bay County Circuit Judge Joseph Sheeran.

Kipfmiller apologized to her family and the judge and concluded by saying that "God knows the truth.''

On Nov. 30, the day her trial was to begin, Kipfmiller pleaded no contest to involuntary manslaughter and disposal of a body. In exchange, prosecutors agreed to dismiss a count of second-degree murder.

A no-contest plea in Michigan is not an admission of guilt but is treated as such for sentencing purposes.
