Free Prostate Cancer Screening In Ferndale

DETROIT (WWJ) More than 200,000 men in the U.S. were diagnosed with prostate cancer last year.  Yet men who are most at risk sometimes do not realize the need for regular screenings.

Doctor Elizabeth Heath from Karmanos Cancer Center says free screenings will be available on Saturday, January 29.

"We do believe that men who have a family history of prostate cancer are at a high risk to develop prostate cancer, men who are of African-American race, older men and men with ... some symptoms," Dr. Heath says.

The free screenings are being offered Saturday afternoon at the Kroger store on 8 Mile in Royal Oak Township.  Doctor Heath says men over 50, men with a family history of prostate cancer and African-American men are at highest risk.

"One in six men will get prostate cancer in their life-time, those are in some ways, staggering numbers, and if there is a way that we can detect it earlier I think it would perhaps, give us some lead-time to try to make an impact on the disease process," states Heath.
