Daggers Allowed In School District For Practicing Sikh Members

PLYMOUTH-CANTON (WWJ) The Plymouth-Canton school district will allow students of the Sikh religion to wear daggers to school but they've got to follow a set of rules.

Frank Ruggirello, the spokesman for the school district, "We met with the Sikh community here in the Canton area and we came to an accommodation plan."

Ruggirello says, among the rules: "The dagger must be sewn into a sheath, so it can't be removed. In the Sikh religion, the dagger is meant to symbolize a commitment to fight evil."

The discussion started last year, when a fourth-grader came to school with a kirpan--a small, ceremonial dagger. The discussion involved points of religion, and safety.
