UD Mercy Brings Back Super Bowl Ad Nauseam -- Plus High Schools

The talk around the water cooler following the Super Bowl each year is as much about the advertising as it is about the game itself. The stakes may be just as high for the advertisers as for the competing football teams, since a 30-second ad costing about $3 million this year.

While many of us watch the game and commercials for the entertainment, students from around the country are looking at this as a fun learning opportunity.

High school and college marketing students have been taking part in a series of video lecture modules and weekly podcasts aligned with a comprehensive marketing curriculum and will apply what they have learned while reviewing these multi-million dollar ads under the tutelage of University of Detroit Mercy marketing professor Michael Bernacchi and Oakland Schools Technical Campus marketing instructor Paul Galbenski.

Bernacchi has hosted his renowned "Super Bowl Ad Nauseam" annually since 1985 with UDM students. For the past seven years, he has also partnered with Oakland Schools and Immersive Engineering (www.immersive.biz) which has helped to expand student participation to more than 180 Michigan high schools over the last seven years as well as participation in the online America's Marketing High School curriculum (www.americasmarketinghighschool.org) to classrooms across the United States.

As you watch the Super Bowl on Sunday, Feb. 6, think of the hundreds of students from across Oakland County and the U.S. who are studying the nuances of each commercial. See how they critically reviewed the advertising by visiting the America's Marketing High School Web site after the game or debrief with many of them at the annual Pizza, Pop and Pretzels press party at the UDM Student Center Ballroom, second floor on Monday, Feb. 7 at noon. The Press Conference Party will also be live streamed through REMC MIStreamnet.org and Wayne Regional Education Service Agency. Survey results will be compared to those of USA Today's Ad Meter.

This year, prior to the annual press party at noon, participating high school students have also been invited to a special America's Marketing High School College Road Trip from 9 to 11 a.m. These students will attend academic program presentations, interact with UDM students, take a campus tour and listen to a presentation on "Social Media" by David Murray prior to the press debriefing.

There will also be a live video stream of the press conference Feb. 7 at noon at www.mistreamnet.org.
